A UK company is looking for a fabric material with good performance combination of flame retardancy and abrasion resistance.
The UK company is a privately owned company specialising in the design and manufacture of protective garments and composite fabrics, utilising a combination of high performance textiles and foams imparting protection and comfort to the user.
The company has a R&D department involved in the development of new foams and foam/fabric composites, and designs and manufactures a range of specialist garments for different end use applications e.g. Police, fire services, and sport & leisure.
The company considers its main area of expertise to be the maximisation of required performance characteristics and practical features e.g. wearability, by designing the best combinations of foams and fabrics. It is very innovative in its approach and is keen to harness the most advanced technologies available to develop future products, and thereby gain competitive advantage in its chosen markets.
The characteristics of flame retardancy and abrasion resistance in fabrics are antagonistic to each other and the company is actively seeking to identify materials, which will offer the best possible combination of the two factors. Generally the company works with a number of synthetic fabrics and other coated materials, including neoprene. The company currently has a fabric with a reasonably good performance combination, but wishes to build on this to offer a higher specification in the future and incorporate increased directional flexibility for better comfort and handling. They would be very interested to partner with an organisation with know-how and/or technology which would enable these improvements. Basic requirements of any suitable materials include:
BS EN 137 fire resistance
Martindale abrasion test – 150,000 cycles ( 12 megapascal test).
Immediate potential applications for such improved fabrics would be in firefighting applications for incorporation into harnesses, hip belts and other garments.
